On Thursday 16th June 2022, I will be climbing Mount Snowdon in support of OSCAR Birmingham and to commemorate ‘World Sickle Cell day ‘
This charity is an organisation that supports children, young people and families who have Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. They are both inherited chronic blood conditions. The donations made will help individuals and families be provided with blankets and warm clothing. I will be personally participating in this cause.
Individuals with Sickle Cell need to stay warm to prevent triggering crisis. The crisis causes them to have excruciating pain in different parts of their body mostly needing hospital pain management and long admissions. The reason for this is that the body responds to cold temperatures by making the blood vessels smaller. When this happens the red blood cells get stuck to the blood vessels reducing oxygen to different organs causing severe pain. Adult and children with Thalassemia major need to have blood transfusions regularly as their body is not making enough haemoglobin. They would feel more cold and fatigued when they are due a transfusion as they don’t have enough red blood cells to provide oxygen to the tissue to keep them warm. In the last month, I have personally come across families that have told me the raise in energy bills is affecting them majorly. They are having to layer up significantly whilst at home, sleep with a jacket on and stay in one room all day to save money on energy bills.
I look forward with your support to be able to provide them with appropriate clothing with insulation and efficient blankets that they can use for themselves and their families.
