In 2012 we began a 2-year project to make the Pride Patchwork Quilt. The inspiration comes from Lillian Dring who in 1951 created the "Patchwork of the Century" for the Festival of Britain, showing advances in women's rights over 100 years. We want to bring together members of the LGBT community to document and commemorate some of the key events of our history. Our starting place is 1960, giving us 53 years to 2013. There will be space to extend and add to the quilt each year.
Why they need our serviceWe need to celebrate our history - for young LGBT people and those new to the LGBT community to realise the extent of the discrimination we have faced; and for us all to celebrate the lives and achievements of LGBT people. We often hear the phrase "why do you still need Pride?" - our Patchwork will answer this in a colourful and creative way and show the local, national and international context for Norwich Pride.
Plan and expected resultsWe hope to bring together at least 50 people to make the Patchwork, with each person doing one patch/year. We meet in the Millennium Library in the Forum on the last Saturday of the month so that we are visible and accessible to everyone. We expect to create a beautiful artifact that will be an essential educational resource. We are building an information pack to accompany the quilt, with more details, photos and interviews for each year. We hope to take the Patchwork on tour in Norfolk schools
