DAGE provides a daily pop-in centre to give older people a safe environment to meet, befriend otherwise more isolated older people through volunteering, and information on crime prevention, fire safety, and health-related projects and services. On a monthly basis local NHS opticians come in to promote their free sight-testing, and the Pension Service and police hold surgeries at DAGE.
Why they need our serviceOlder people suffer from social isolation as family and friends are no longer available to offer support. They can miss out on claiming vital entitlements and their mental and physical health can deteriorate through a lack of social interaction and support that can be offered. Many older people themselves benefit from volunteering as befrienders to those isolated and without other support.
Plan and expected resultsThis project will build on the track record of running this service since 2001 at DAGE's centre in Deptford, where older people have completed evaluation forms to demonstrate the impact of the service. This includes attending regular health checks, both at DAGE and at their local surgeries, in accessing entitlements, and attending DAGE's pop-in, outings and cabarets to overcome social isolation.
