On the 29th September, I am running in the Robin Hood Half Marathon to raise funds for Imara, a Nottingham-based charity dedicated to supporting children, young people, and families who have experienced the trauma of child sexual abuse.
In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 20 children have experienced sexual abuse, though the actual number may be higher due to many cases going unreported.
Approximately 1 in 3 child sexual abuse cases goes unreported until adulthood.
Children who experience sexual abuse are at a significantly higher risk of developing mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and self-harm.
Imara aims to empower and promote the recovery of children, young people and their families affected by child sexual abuse, by offering early intervention. Imara provides comprehensive support for children and young people who have experienced trauma, offering pre- and post-trial therapy through creative arts approaches, specialist care for acute symptoms like anxiety and sleep issues, and consistent, impartial guidance throughout the judicial process. They also assist with risk assessments, education, health, housing, and financial concerns to help families stabilise and recover after abuse.
Any support towards this important cause would be hugely appreciated and would go a long way. Thank you!
