On Thursday 16th June 2022, I will be climbing Mount Snowdon in Wales as part of a team in support of OSCAR Birmingham.
This charity supports children, young people and families who have Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. They are both chronic, life-long blood disorders which require regular blood transfusions and medication to help maintain their condition. Those living with Thalassaemia produce none or too little amounts of haemoglobin which is required for red cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Therefore, symptoms include fatigue, weakness, breathlessness and risks of organ failure due to iron overload. Individuals with Sickle cell however, do not produce round, healthy red cells. Instead, are sickled- which do not last long and result in blockages within the blood vessels in any part of the body. This results in painful episodes called a 'crisis'. Individuals may require hospital admissions due to the excruciating pain not being maintained at home, these excruciating episodes can last from a couple of days to weeks.
Children are 300 times more at risk of having a stroke and other health complications.
Not only does these conditions impact them physically, but can also have detrimental effects to their mental health. They can feel isolated and indifferent to other individuals which may lead to depressions and anxiety.
Young children and families facing these struggles daily could benefit from your donations to OSCAR Birmingham.
Therefore, your donations can help the charity over the next 6 months to:
Support 50 families experiencing poverty and hardship by providing baby essentials and care packages.
Help the charity organise a holiday programme for up to 100 children this summer who live with this invisible illness.
Please help by contributing what you can (and remember to tell a friend!)
Thank you so much!
