I am part of the Dignity for Asylum Seekers Group, a group of refugees, including asylum seekers, and allies who organise public creative protests against destitution, detention and scapegoating of refugees. This year the group have decided to walk 50 miles to the regional UK Border Agency Office in Cardiff to end the suffering of asylum seekers, through exposing the harsh reality of peoples lives and making connections along the way. We set off on the 29th May. http://asylumseekersinbristol.blogspot.co.uk/ For those of you unable to come on the walk but would like to support, please sponsor me. The furthest I have ever walked is about 20 miles and never done several days walking. My muscles are going to ache but I'm sure the collective will and excitement will get me through, plus hearing stories of how far people had to walk to reach the UK will keep it in perspective. All money raised will go towards making sure Bristol Refugee Rights can continue to run their excellent Advocacy and Information service which prevents many BRR members from being forced in to destitution and helps people access solicitors and get their asylum applications moving forward. Dignity for Asylum Seekers grew out of the BRR Welcome Centre and without the practical solidarity offered from there, it would be much harder for us to do this political organising work.
