About

So my story is quite simple. I am lucky enough to be the aunt of a beautiful 10 year old girl called Lillie. Lillie battles daily against type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is affecting more and more children every year and means that currently there is no way to reverse it - only manage it through injecting insulin. Lillie recently sat down and took the time to show me how and what she has to do every single time she wants to eat something containing more than 10g of carbs. Let me tell you - I was stunned! It made me realise that I had been taking the ease of eating and drinking for granted my whole life! For Lillie and her family, eating is a whole regimented procedure that has to be stuck to otherwise potentially leading to life threatening consequences. So, for my Neice, the first thing she has to do with any food before consuming is count the carbs. Secondly she then has to test her blood sugar levels by pricking her finger and putting the blood into a strip that goes into a machine. The machine tells her a reading and lets her know if she’s high or low. Next she must enter the carbs of the food she wants to eat into the machine. The machine now works out and tells her how much insulin she must inject before eating in order to maintain a safe blood sugar level. Then she sets up her insulin pen and injects herself with the needle. Finally she gets to eat the mint choc chip cornetto or her packed lunch or whatever. As you can see, for any adult this would be a tiresome routine but Whilst Lillie was showing me all this, I thought how brave and resilient she was and how she’d not once complained. Nor asked her Mum to help her with it, and was completely independent with this massive lifestyle change. For the next month, I will be completing a no carb (over 10g) challenge to raise money for mk kids with diabetes - a charity Lillie is a part of that provides support and activities for children living with diabetes.
