The Big Pond will work with local residents of Redhill and neighbouring wards to undertake significant environmental enhancement of a pond and its surrounding area in order to provide a more attractive and usable greenspace for the local community. The site is located at the lower end of Sunderland North Community Sports Complex. This project will work with local schools, voluntary sector groups and residents to significantly enhance the pond in order to benefit both wildlife and local people.

Why they need our service

This site has been identified through local groups and councillors. The site currently suffers from high amounts of litter, vandalism, missing railings and anti-social behaviour. It should be a highly used space where local people feel safe and can enjoy this potentially amazing facility. A primary school within several minutes walk has no pond of its own and wishes to be able to use the site to enhance its education delivery.

Plan and expected results

A programme of practical work and activities will enhance the current vegetation of the pond and surrounding shrub areas; allow safer access to the pond edge and look at natural play opportunities. Through working with residents to increase use of the pond area it is intended to help reduce future environmental damage. Local young people will be engaged in diversionary activities through the provision of training in practical skills and natural history linked educational activities.
