The Phoenix Cantata, a new choral work by composer Helen Glavin explores the influence of fire, water and iron from pre-history to the present day, within the setting of the South Downs. The Cantata will be performed as part of the Brighton Fringe and, led by John Hancorn, the performance involves The Everyman Ensemble, Paddock Singers, East Sussex Bach Choir and children from Southover and Hertford Schools at St Mary's Church in Brighton and the Foundry Gallery Lewes on 19th and 20th May.

Why they need our service

This is an opportunity for people of all ages to join in a creative endeavour and work with a talented composer and musical director. It links old and young through the activity of singing and limits social isolation. It also is an opportunity for children to join with adults and experience music in a new way. As it focusses on the legends and the oral histories of local people within the South Downs, it encourages enjoyment of the environment and contributes towards a healthy lifestyle.

Plan and expected results

To present a new choral work inspired by a local composer which will benefit the community To involve people who are not usually involved in arts events as audience and as participants and help to break down social isolation. To enable a collaboration of musicians and participants in a work which is rooted in local history. To create a unifying experience inspired by the South Downs and its communities but one that also has universal appeal.
