I got involved with Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees after my mum had been offered great advice and support by her local Age UK. I responded to an ad in the window at the Choices Centre in Woolshops, Halifax. It was looking for volunteers to help older people learn about IT, through a Online at Home project. This lends laptops and tablets and provides 1 to 1 support for a period to help the older person learn and decide whether to invest in their own computer equipment. I'd already helped a number of older friends with their computers and felt that it was something I could do to give something back to the local community.. I'd played with computers since I was 13 and had just retired from a long career in IT.
I've ended up also providing IT support to our staff and volunteers across Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees offices and Companionship Centres. I'm now one of the Trustees.
Last year I did a sponsored Yorkshire Three Peaks with a group of staff and supporters. This year a number of us are joining in the Halifax Long March.
This 15 mile walk runs through the night of Easter Sunday / Monday, and after many years raising funds for Christian Aid it has now been opened up to other charities.
Please help me raise funds to support the great work that we are doing for older people in West Yorkshire.
