Camread offers a reading, recording and visiting service to blind and visually impaired people in the city of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. It produces an audio magazine called Cam-Mag eight times a year which is circulated free of charge to 400 of our clients. Volunteers visit to either read or help with general administrative tasks such as writing cheques, reading post, writing Christmas cards as well as providing friendship and support. Books and texts may be recorded on request.
Why the community needs usCamread works with an often forgotten group within the local community. The Charity helps to make the written word accessible to those with a visual impairment. In addition Camread helps to alleviate feelings of isolation common in those with a visual impairment, particularly if sight has been lost later in life. The production of the audio magazine Cam-mag provides information and entertainment specifically for those with sight loss living in the region, helping to keep clients informed.
Our impact on the communityBlind people, many of whom are elderly and with additional disabilities, are able to access information on events suitable for their needs. Those house-bound by their disability are suppported by volunteer visitors and no longer feel isolated. Interests and activities enjoyed prior to sight loss may be maintained by the support of volunteers and information via the audio magazine Cam-mag. An enjoyment of reading may be maintained by recorded pieces from Camread or volunteer readers.
