Fishing is more than a profession — it’s a way of life.
However, with an ageing workforce and fewer young people entering the industry, the future of fishing is at risk.
Devon Young Fishers CIC is working to change that.
We provide hands-on training, mentorship, and career pathways for young people aged 11–25, helping to secure the future of the UK’s fishing industry. Our focus is on supporting young people—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—to gain practical experience and develop skills in sustainable fishing and the wider marine sector.
Devon Young Fishers was created after identifying a significant gap in opportunities for under-16s interested in fishing and marine careers. Our aim is to bridge this gap by engaging young people early, building their confidence, knowledge, and skills, and preparing them for future opportunities within the industry.
Our work is designed to complement, not duplicate, post-16 training initiatives and fishing networks. By introducing young people to the industry earlier, we help ensure they are ready to progress into further training, apprenticeships, or employment.
We are committed to empowering young people—including NEET individuals and those from underrepresented communities—through practical learning, mentorship, and real-world experiences.
By creating a clear and supported pathway into the fishing and marine industries, Devon Young Fishers is helping to preserve Devon’s fishing heritage and secure a sustainable future for the next generation.
