Horizons is a small Plymouth based charity providing inclusive sailing activities for local young people.
Horizons work with children aged 8-19 from disadvantaged neighbourhoods and young people with disabilities up to age 25. Every year over 1,000 young people experience the physical and mental health benefits of being out on the water with Horizons.
Horizons aim is to provide opportunities to learn practical skills through sailing. Our young sailors have fun, whilst also gaining confidence, problem solving skills, teamwork experience, and the awareness to keep themselves and others safe on the water. Through our activities participants build their resilience and positive character attributes, whilst gaining transferable skills that improve the chances of success in their wider lives.
We deliver a range of activities including:
- Inclusive youth sailing club,
- Educational school trips,
- Wheelchair accessible motorboating,
- Royal yachting Association accredited training courses,
- Winter (land-based) youth club.
These activities are offered to our participants free of cost or at heavily subsidised rates, this ensures that cost is not a barrier to access. For example our youth sailing club sessions are by voluntary £2.00 donation. Without Horizons our young people could not otherwise afford or access the activities we provide.
At Horizons we are always looking for people to join our amazing team of adult volunteers. Whilst sailing experience is beneficial it is not a requirement, as Horizons can provide all relevant training, and volunteers support us on land as well as on the water. For example helping young people get kitted up at the start and end of sessions, boat maintenance, fundraising, representing Horizons at local events, and much more.
