Imagine by John Lennon was playing when my mum died at home on 24th September 2020.
I’m raising money for a local charity called Families in Grief (FIG). Their overarching mission is to ensure that all bereaved families in North Devon and Torridge receive the support they need, when they need it – free of charge and tailored to meet the developing needs of the young people and adults in their family.
In 2020, when my mum was dying from terminal breast cancer, the global pandemic arrived and the world went into lockdown. I got in contact with Families in Grief and they were amazing, they called and reassured us with some worries that we had.
On 1st May I am walking 100km along the Camino in Northern Spain. Starting at Sarria, we will spend four days walking to Santiago de Compostela. Training for the walk has been great, I’ve been clocking up the miles with a local crew of friends, who have provided non-stop chat, cake and much laughter.
Grief is like a rollercoaster, you never know how you’re going to be feeling from day to day. My mum died nearly five years ago but some days it feels like yesterday. There’s so many things that remind me of her; runner beans, sweet peas, tractors, the secret veg shop… the list goes on. Every time I see a robin in the garden I talk to her.
Any support that you can give this amazing charity would be great. And to everyone that has lost a loved one, I send you a big hug.
To my mum, Granny Apple, we love you so much and miss you loads. xx
