Next month I'll be turning 25 and I've decided that I want to do something meaningful to celebrate this milestone. Instead of receiving gifts - which I'd still very much appreciate - I'm asking my community to consider making a donation to Men's Minds Matter, a suicide prevention organisation focused on supporting men specifically. 75% of all deaths by suicide are male. A man or boy passes by suicide every two hours in the UK. It is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 55.
For those who don't know me personally, male suicide is something I have first hand experience with. When I was 9, my dad passed away from suicide. For a long time, this wasn't something I felt comfortable talking about or even saying out loud. It's through therapy and my own healing journey that I've reached a place where I want to use my experience to help others and work to remove the stigma I've associated with suicide for so many years.
My goal for this fundraiser is not only to raise money for an incredible organisation, but also to encourage more conversations around mental health and asking for help. These conversations are difficult but they're so necessary. If raising money and awareness can help even one person access support, or help prevent another child from losing their father in this way, then it will mean everything to me.
