In memory of my younger brother Damian, I will be climbing the Snowdon summit at night on the 13th of June to raise money for Men's Minds Matter.
On Boxing Day 2024, my life changed forever when i received a call that I had lost my brother Damian to suicide due to his mental health struggles. Losing someone you love is heartbreaking but losing a brother and in this way leaves pain that words will never fully explain. Damian was deeply loved by his family, children, friends and everyone lucky enough to know him. He brought laughter, love and light into so many lives and the emptiness left behind by his loss is something my family carry every single day.
Mental health battles are often fought in silence. People smile on the outside while struggling inside, afraid to speak about the weight they carry. No family should ever have to experience this kind of heartbreak, which is why I want to do something in Damian’s memory that could help others.
To honour him and feel his pain, I will be carrying on my back a pound of weight for every year Damian was with us, and for every month we have been without him a total of 53 pounds.
Every painful step up the mountain will represent the weight of grief, the pain of loss and the silent battles so many people face every day.
This climb is also about hope. Hope that by speaking openly about mental health, we can break the stigma, encourage people to ask for help and remind those who are struggling that they are never alone.
Any donation, no matter how small, would mean the world to me and my family. For helping keep Damian’s memory alive and supporting a cause that could save lives.
