I have an autistic son. Over the past couple of years he has struggled to engage with his peers and function in an educational environment. He was provided the opportunity for him to work with New Leaf Learning at the Courteenhall Estate, where he was helped to develop nature-based, connection-focused strategies to engage with learning and build resilience. He is now thriving.
To acknowledge building of resilience I will be taking on a range of endurance challenges in 24-25 to raise money and awareness of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and fantastic services provided by New Leaf Learning. Events completed to date are: January - Zwift Race (4th place finish), February - Warwick Half Marathon, March - Mad Hare Sportive (top 40 finish), April - Sprint Duathlon, May - Shires and Spires Ultramarathon, June - Blenheim Triathlon Weekend Warrior (9th place finish), July - Nottingham Outlaw Iron Distance Triathlon (competed under 11 hours). August - Superhero Triathlon: Thomas completed a 150m swim, 3km bike ride and 1km run; and Benji showed super speed on the 1km run. I also took part in a Backyard Ultramarathon - completing 10 loops (67km) before retiring due to injury. In September I completed a Marathon Swim in 14 degree water temperatures and 1 week after recovering from a chest infection. In October, I took on the Harborough Festival of CYcling - a 103km route with nearly 1km elevation - I completed this in 3 hours and 50 minutes. In November I completed the Silverstone half marathon in 1:35 in strong winds and rain! Finally, in December I took on a Standard Distance Duathlon - completing it in 2:24 and 16th place.
