The project helps children aged 4 to 12 years who are struggling to cope with their emotions for a range of reasons. It works with specific primary schools across Harborough District who refer children to the project.
Through the project we help children and their parents to communicate better and build their relationships through play-ful activities. Our evidence and research show that this results in improved child behaviour, healthier family dynamics, and ultimately better educational and developmental attainment by children.
Schools refer families to workshops for parents, following by workshops for these parents and their children. Children are able to safely express their feelings through play, which will help them learn to regulate their emotions better. Parents learn how play can help, how to let the child lead the play using therapeutic play techniques, and how to improve their relationship with all their children, so continuing the benefits of the workshops at home.
Schools also take advantage of free training for staff from one of our partner Play Therapists, and nominate two staff members to join a Play Champions group to receive ongoing support and ideas to help their schools incorporate playful techniques to help children's emotional health within all aspects of the school day.
We are currently also able to offer schools a heavily subsidised rate for a child to attend up to 15 sessions of Play Therapy at our Charity premises in Market Harborough.
