Appeal focus: Protect Maes Glasfryn (EcoDewi)

"The vision is for a space with woodlands, wildflower meadows, a community orchard, criss-crossing paths for community access and a range of wildlife habitats, maybe a wildlife pond one day."

Can you help?

EcoDewi, a community organisation focused on projects on the St Davids Peninsula in Pembrokeshire and Localgiving members since 2021, has just launched a new appeal. They are seeking to raise £3k, to protect Maes Glasfryn, nearly four acres of land in the heart of St Davids City, to help improve biodiversity and for the benefit of the community.

Whilst the land is privately owned, EcoDewi has been working with the landowners for over three years to improve the site and protect it. Nearly 1,000 native hedgerow & tree whips and 52 fruit & nut trees have been planted, plus wildflower seeds sown, all with help of 3-16 year olds from Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, local volunteers and support from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA).

In November 2025, EcoDewi successfully worked with the owners and PCC to register the land as a Town or Village Green, which means it is protected from development. The vision is for a space with woodlands, wildflower meadows, a community orchard, criss-crossing paths for community access and a range of wildlife habitats, maybe a wildlife pond one day.

The EcoDewi team are now collaborating with St Davids City Council to sign a 100- year lease for the site to ensure it is secure for generations to come. The City Council has agreed in principle to consider a lease subject to investigating legal, financial and governance matters, as well as how the lease work will be funded. But! The legal work alone will cost between £2,000 and £3,000. They hope to secure some small grants but have decided to launch a fundraising appeal with Localgiving to ensure the legal fees can be covered and future improvements made to Maes Glasfryn.

Luke Upton, Head of Communications at Localgiving: "We know first hand the brilliant work that all the team at EcoDewi do for their community and we are excited to help support this new appeal."
