We all have personal experience of disconnection and loneliness - whether your own or someone you love. Being isolated for prolonged periods is deeply bad for our health. If you are reading this, it is likely that, like us, you have also observed that widespread loneliness is deeply bad for society too, creating the conditions for division and hate. Having understood this link between loneliness/isolation and social fragmentation/democracy, we have come to realise that connection in community is at the heart of the solution to almost everything.
We need more connection and community in the UK - without it we are unhappy, unhealthy, divided and disempowered. There’s only one way to build connection, community and togetherness: from the bottom up! So Civil Society Consulting CIC has come up with 32 practical actions we can all take to build connections in our own lives and within our communities, as well as build bridges between communities: 32 Steps to Togetherness.
As social impact experts, we know that civil society organisations (charities and community organisations) are the most efficient, effective, and sustainable mechanism for building community. Here are some examples of the type of organisation we mean:
Through 32 Steps to Togetherness, we’re supporting grassroots organisations like them - from a diverse range of communities across the UK. We are also bringing them together to establish a UK-wide ‘community of community leaders’. The 32 Steps to Togetherness manual provides the shared vision for everyone to unite behind.
What are we doing to build this movement?
Who are we?
We are Civil Society Consulting CIC - a non-profit that provides affordable and free support to organisations that are advancing health, equality and social solidarity in the UK. We formed our community interest company over a decade ago (in 2011) to bring our evaluation, fundraising, strategic thinking and design expertise together; and to make a positive difference to the civil society and public square. Since we are now living in the most challenging 'cost of living' times for civil society organisations and the wellbeing of democratic society is a great risk, we want to help social action leaders grow, develop and do more in their communities. As global citizens we are keen to support people and communities to realise their international and ecological responsibilities and aspirations.
