We are a community cafe, serving healthy and affordable vegetarian food, promoting Fairtrade options and locally sourced produce, and strengthening partnerships between different parts of the community in Lenton. We are a not-for-profit, volunteer-led organisation, and we reinvest any profits in the local community. We have eight core values: 1. Community focussed 2. Volunteer-run 3. Healthy and affordable 4. Fairtrade 5. Organic 6. Vegetarian 7. Environment protection 8. Locally sourced food
Why the community needs usWe are the only non-alcoholic, daytime place in Lenton where friends can meet to share a pot of tea and a slice of cake. By providing an ever-changing range of vegetarian meals at prices under £4, we make it easy for people to make positive choices about food, and expand their horizons on issues such as vegetarianism, Fairtrade and food miles. We give students and permanent residents the chance to socialise and volunteer together, breaking down barriers between these parts of the community.
Our impact on the communitySince 2004, we have provided over fifty thousand nutritious vegetarian meals, introducing this healthy option to many people who would never have considered eating vegetarian before. We have sold Fairtrade drinks totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds, and contributing to the Fairtrade market in Britain trebling in size. Many of our volunteers have benefited from the experience and skills they have learned, going on to paid careers in hospitality or even setting up their own business!
