Mothers Uncovered gives participants a chance to explore their feelings and experiences in a safe, structured environment. Our activities, comprising facilitated discussion and arts activities aid mothers' mental health by offering an outlet for their experiences. Our work is based largely in Brighton and Hove and all of our facilitators are not only mothers, but past participants.

Why the community needs Mothers Uncovered
Here is what some of our participants have said:
'A truly valuable experience which pulled me from the brink of post-natal depression. Considerate and understanding facilitators'
'There isn't enough support for new mums. Just felt vital to take stock of my experiences and understand what other mothers are going through - fantastic not to feel so alone in this'
'A group properly for the mother is essential for her sanity & well-being'

Our impact on the community Mothers Uncovered fills the gap between informal mum and baby groups and the medical scrutiny and social stigma of PND groups. The supportive atmosphere builds a strong sense of community. We show that women's post-natal mental health is as important as antenatal physical health.

We also run The Teen Years for parents and carers of older children, Frazzled for parents/carers of SEND children and My Birth, specifically for women suffering from birth trauma.

In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of direct deaths 6 weeks to a year after the end of pregnancy. In 2020, women were three times more likely to die by suicide during or up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy compared with 2017 to 2019. At least one in five women experiences poor maternal mental health, with hidden levels of isolation, loneliness and anxiety or depression costing the UK millions per year and with unknown longer term effects on children and families. At Mothers Uncovered, we believe the true number is higher, but many women do not report their feelings, so they are undocumented.
The process of becoming a mother, known as matrescence, is a social and biological period of transition with enduring changes to women’s sense of self, identity and social status. This disruption is biological, leading to a loss of continuity with a previous life, leaving women needing to make sense of their experiences and the impact of those on their mental health and wellbeing.
