We believe having a chat can brighten your day.
Since our launch in 2017, The Chatty Café Scheme has grown to become one of the UK’s leading non-profit organisations dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation.
Over the years, we have developed extensive experience and expertise through service delivery, volunteer programmes, and partnership work. We actively listen to people with lived experience of loneliness, using their insights to shape and continually improve everything we do.
Loneliness is a complex issue, often linked to both mental and physical health challenges. Our strategy focuses on addressing loneliness early, helping to improve overall well-being and prevent individuals from reaching crisis point. While our services are not crisis interventions, they act as powerful preventative measures—reducing the risk of severe loneliness and, in turn, easing pressure on the NHS.
Our work is made possible by the many incredible people who share our belief that “having a chat can brighten someone’s day.” Alongside hundreds of beneficiaries, we’re supported by a large community of passionate volunteers who often tell us that helping others feel less lonely has improved their own wellbeing too.
We have developed a highly effective model that makes a tangible difference in reducing loneliness. A recent two-year, in-depth study—alongside ongoing research—has shown that our services significantly reduce loneliness among beneficiaries and create positive outcomes for a wide range of stakeholders, including volunteers, businesses, community groups, social prescribers, and GP practices.
To reach as many people as possible, we offer three distinct pathways of support for those experiencing loneliness and social isolation:
Chatter & Natter Tables: face-to-face meetups held in cafés and community spaces
Chatty Telephone Calls: weekly one-to-one calls from a trained volunteer
Chatty Online Groups: friendly virtual sessions that bring people together from across the country
