Supporting mental health and wellbeing and building connection through nature, creativity, Forest School and volunteering in Uppermill, Oldham.
You Matter Saddleworth CIC is a nature-based community interest company based in Uppermill, Oldham. We use woodland, creativity, practical outdoor work and therapeutic approaches to support mental health, confidence, connection and wellbeing.
You Matter grew from our own lived experience of knowing that traditional support does not always feel accessible, suitable or easy to reach. We wanted to create a place where people can slow down, feel useful, meet others, learn new skills and spend time in nature without pressure.
Since 2024, we have been developing our woodland site next to Saddleworth Spiritualist Church on High Street in Uppermill. With support from volunteers, young people and partner organisations, we have improved access, cleared overgrown areas, planted native trees, managed invasive balsam and created a growing community space for outdoor learning, wellbeing and connection.
We have run volunteer days, family Easter craft activities and an egg hunt, mindfulness sessions, men’s creative and outdoor mindfulness sessions, and regular work with students from specialist education schools. Our sessions include Forest School activities, nature-based creativity, conservation work, traditional crafts and gentle wellbeing activities.
Our work supports young people, adults, families, volunteers, schools, community groups and people experiencing isolation, anxiety, low confidence or poor mental health. We help people build confidence through practical tasks, time outdoors and meaningful community involvement.
We also work with Spark Oldham CIC and other local organisations to create opportunities for young people and adults to gain skills, experience and meaningful roles in their community.
Our long-term goal is to keep improving our woodland and other local sites we have been asked to care for, developing better facilities, access, sustainability and year-round spaces so more people can benefit from nature, community and meaningful activity.
