Community Story: Primrose Lane Primary School PTA

For our latest feature profiling a recent recipient of a grant from the Yorkshire GREEN Local Community Fund from  National Grid Electricity Transmission we are in Wetherby, West Yorkshire to find out about a fantastic project delivered by Primrose Lane Primary School PTA. Luke Upton chatted with the school's headteacher Lara Bailey about their absolutely fantastic Primrose Wellbeing Cabin and how it’s supporting the school’s pupils.

Luke Upton (LU): Thanks for the time today, Lara, could you tell us about the importance of a "wellbeing cabin" for young people. And why this is becoming increasingly important.  

Lara Bailey (LB): Primrose Lane has a fantastic outdoor space, and the addition of a wellbeing cabin will provide our children with an additional way to enjoy the outdoors in all weathers. Furthermore, it will provide a great space for children to share and read books developing those key early literacy skills as we plan to include a book area within the cabin. 

The Primrose Wellbeing Cabin will provide a safe, nurturing break-out space for vulnerable pupils who need additional emotional support. It will be a calm, welcoming and inclusive environment where children can regulate their emotions, access pastoral care, and build resilience away from the pressures of the classroom. By offering a dedicated space for reflection, small-group work, and targeted interventions, we can respond proactively to rising mental health needs, reduce anxiety-related absences, and improve readiness to learn.

Positioned alongside a newly developed garden area, the cabin will connect indoor wellbeing support with outdoor learning and nature-based activities. Access to green space has been shown to reduce stress, improve concentration, and support positive behaviour. The garden will be used for sensory activities but will also offer practical learning opportunities, strengthening the link between emotional wellbeing and environmental awareness.

Beyond pastoral support, the cabin will make tangible connections to the school’s sustainability plan and add educational value by providing a flexible hub for enrichment activities, on STEM topics such as biodiversity/ecosystems. Designed to be inclusive and accessible, the cabin will foster a sense of belonging, ensuring every child feels supported, inspired, and able to thrive.

The Children at Primrose Lane are really excited about the addition of the wellbeing cabin to our school grounds and are looking forward to being able to access it. 

LU:  You’ve just received funding from Yorkshire Green Local Community Fund from National Grid Electricity Transmission and Localgiving. How important is this kind of grant funding to your organisation?

LB: This Yorkshire GREEN Local Community Fund grant is very important to us. Without the grant we would not be able to develop a purpose-built space away from a more formal learning environment. We put children's wellbeing at the heart of all we do. If children are not happy and regulated in school, they find it hard to learn. The wellbeing cabin will provide a quiet and calm space for our children to be closer to nature and support their wellbeing and mental health. 

Primrose Lane, like many schools is facing difficult financial circumstances. The grant funding enables us to provide additional spaces for children in school to learn away from the pressures of classroom so they can happy and healthy in school. So, a very big thank you to National Grid Electricity Transmission and Localgiving for making it possible.

LU: Brilliant, and as we always ask, more money aside, what would help you most? 

LB: Our wellbeing cabin is next to our new Primrose Lane allotment space- any budding gardeners in the local area that would like support staff and children to develop this space further would be greatly appreciated. Contact us for more details.
