Manchesters migrant destitution fund provides monthly cash grants for those excluded from formal systems of support due to violent asylum policies and systems. I was apprehensive at first about the impact I could have supporting MDF however, I was given a new perspective that I would like to share in encouraging you to donate. It is not that the money will act as a long-term fix or change anyone’s life, rather, it can provide a reclaimed sense of autonomy and wellbeing- a right necessary for mental and physical health that destitution through violent asylum policy has stripped them of. 60% of those accessing the fund have reported mental health problems and 56% reported physical health problems. Grants are commonly used for transport to medical appointments, housing expenses, legal advice, and buying fresh, culturally appropriate food. Supporting this fund is about more than money, it is also about changes to the lived experiences of destitution and fighting against harmful notions of deservingness. I urge you to consider not how much money you should donate but to be inspired by the impact that any amount can have for those who have been violently excluded from formal systems of support. The half marathon I am doing gives me an opportunity to reach out, make visible, and call for support of migrants facing destitution. Every run feels a little easier knowing who my energies are directed towards.
