Please donate generously to create a new nectar rich meadow on the junction of Abbeydale Road and Avenue Road, in south-west Sheffield.

Four years ago, a now defunct local community group called Abbeydale Road Trees used Covid Recovery funds from Sheffield Council to create a 3-year temporary Parklet at the junction of Abbeydale Road and Avenue Road. While temporary, it did beautify the area, and the additional seating and greenery was much appreciated by locals and passers-by.

Nether Edge and Sharrow Sustainable Transformation (NESST) has been working with Sheffield Council to find a way to create permanent greenery here, in a way that maximises nectar and biodiversity.

We've settled on an exciting solution called a sand-based meadow, contained within a new stone planter. This exciting form of meadow creation has been successfully promoted by The Eden Project, and demonstrated most successfully in Calderstones Park in Liverpool (see photos).

Sand-based meadows are purposely nutrient poor, which promotes a fantastic floriferous wildflower display each Spring and Summer, and which is nectar rich for the wonderful bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Our aim is to use this as a demonstration project in Sheffield, which can be used as inspiration for other similar projects, both locally and in wider Sheffield.

The design includes a new bench, facing the bus stop, and you can see an artists impression of what it will look like in one of the images.

At the rear of the new structure, NESST is funding two new street trees from separate funds.

The cost of creating this permanent greenery, where once there was just tarmac is £7773. This includes materials, labour and the wildflower seeds and perennial plants.

Please donate generously.
