We are creating a new community orchard in the centre of Shalford, in front of the cemetery, opposite Shalford Infant School and the Queen Vic. It is for everyone, of all ages, to be involved and to enjoy.

Guildford Borough Council, who own and manage the area, and Surrey Council, who have supplied many trees, have been really helpful (and we're very very grateful!!)

•     Over 30 fruit trees were planted over 2 sessions in December 2024 and January 2025. We do need help with the cost of caring for them by watering, weeding and pruning.

•     Orchards provide a habitat for all kinds of wildlife - mammals, birds and insects. We’d like a wildlife camera (or two) to monitor what’s passing through.

•     We want to manage and enhance the grassland including planting wildflower seeds, plants and bulbs.

•     A low lying part of the site naturally retains water for much of the year. We plan to develop it as a Scrape pond, a habitat for amphibians and invertebrates as well as attracting breeding birds.

•     We run Apple Days and other celebratory events for the enjoyment of the local community. Insurance is essential for these to happen and there are other costs too.

We are local residents, enthusiastic about making the project work for the benefit of the community for generations to come. Now is a great time to get involved. If you want to be part of this, please contact us on: shalfordcommunityorchard@gmail.com. You can find out more about the Shalford Climate Action Group at: https://sclimateaction.wixsite.com/scag. Many thanks.
