Type 1 Kidz supports children and young people living with Type 1 Diabetes and provides regular group sessions for them to come together, get support, learn from one another and try new things in a safe environment. The groups are informal and we take part in lots of activities including mental health & wellbeing, sport, university and more ... diabetes can really affect every part of your life. We also give children and young people new opportunities such as going on trips and residentials.
We work in partnership with the Children and Young People's Diabetes Network and have links with all of the clinics across the region, ensuring that the voices of children, young people and their families are at the centre of diabetes care in the North East and North Cumbria.

Why the community needs us
It is crucial that children, young people and families have the opportunity to meet others in the same position as them and that we can support a dialogue with the clinical team to make improvements to service.
Families tell us that increasing understanding about T1 is important to them and we work with other local organisations and schools to raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes.

Our impact on the community
In 2023/24 we had 277 contacts with children & young people with T1 Diabetes and an additional 500 contacts with family and community members. Children & young people have told us that coming to the groups have given them more confidence and knowledge.
