Hi, I’m Mike and on 19th September 2026 I’ll be swimming 6 miles in the Serpentine to raise money for the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust.
At 57 years old, taking on a challenge like this feels both exciting and daunting—especially as I’m definitely not a natural swimmer! The event is widely described as the swimming equivalent of running a marathon, so it will push me well outside my comfort zone.
I’m already three months into training, with 7am swims five days a week at Marlborough Leisure Centre. I have started my open water training at Lake 32 & 86 —so cold water, early mornings and unpredictable British weather are all part of the journey although the barmy weather we have been having recently makes it almost a pleasure!
I’m taking on this challenge to support the incredible work of the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust. The charity helps older and vulnerable people across Wiltshire stay safe and secure in their homes, while also supporting them to protect themselves from scams and cyber fraud. To continue providing these free of charge vital services, the charity needs to raise over £400,000 every year. £185 pays for an average visit to a vulnerable person, £35 pays for the hardware installed for someone to feel safe and secure.
The discomfort I’ll experience swimming 6 miles is nothing compared to the challenges many vulnerable people face, which is why I’m determined to do everything I can to raise as much money as possible. If you’re able to sponsor me, I’d be hugely grateful. Every donation will keep me motivated through the early mornings, cold water training and long miles ahead.
Thank you very much for your support!
