Linda is abseiling 418ft down Northampton Lift Tower to raise awareness of TINNITUS**, the impact it can have on lives & the help & support that's available. 10 years ago Linda's husband Glen developed severe tinnitus symptoms. He couldn't get access to the help & support he desperately needed. The system failed him & tragically he killed himself because he couldn't cope with his symptoms & saw no hope - because nobody would give him any! Deafconnect runs Northants Tinnitus Support to make sure everyone gets the help & support they need to manage their symptoms & live their best quality life. In addition to 1:1 support & group support NTS also actively raises awareness of tinnitus in Northamptonshire, liaising with GP surgeries, hospitals, other health support groups & charities etc.
THERE IS HELP, THERE IS HOPE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
**Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the head &/or ear which have no external source. It derives from the Latin word for ringing & those living with the condition may have to endure a ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling or other noise. The sensation can be constant or intermittent & it can vary in volume. 7.5 million UK adults have tinnitus. The majority of those aren't troubled by it, but 1 in 10 have severe debilitating symptoms that affect their quality of life & mental wellbeing. It can affect sleep, relationships, work, cause anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts & in thankfully rare, extreme cases can lead to suicide. NO-ONE should suffer because of tinnitus. There may be no cure but there are plenty of things that can help relieve symptoms and enable quality of life. EVERYONE should have access to the right information & treatment, be taken seriously and NEVER be told nothing can be done, this is not true. Empathy, understanding & validation of emotional/psychological distress from the very first request for help is vital and potentially life saving.
THERE IS HELP, THERE IS HOPE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
