Bringing Joy, Confidence and Connection Through Circus Skills

At Young At Heart ULO CIC, we’re always exploring imaginative ways to bring joy, movement, and connection to the lives of people living with dementia. We’re launching a fundraiser to buy engaging, accessible circus skills resources – including flower sticks, peacock feathers, juggling balls and more – to deliver dementia-friendly circus skills workshops in our groups.

Why circus skills? Because they’re not just fun – they’re profoundly therapeutic. These playful tools help improve hand-eye coordination, balance, and focus. They stimulate both brain and body, encouraging gentle movement, laughter, and creativity in a relaxed, non-judgemental space.

Practising circus skills provides a safe sense of challenge. Each small success – whether balancing a feather or tossing a beanbag – boosts self-esteem and brings moments of pride. The colourful props and simple techniques offer sensory stimulation and spark conversation, reminiscence, and shared smiles.

Most importantly, these sessions foster connection. People with dementia often feel isolated or left out of activities. Our circus skills workshops are inclusive, adaptable, and can be enjoyed together with carers – helping to strengthen relationships and create joyful memories.
