This year, Kim and Nino from Merched Gwyllt are taking on the Cardiff 10K to raise money for Age Connects Torfaen—a charity whose values closely reflect everything we believe in as a community.

Merched Gwyllt was created to bring women together, build confidence, encourage people outdoors, try new things and ensure nobody feels alone. At its heart is the belief that genuine connections and supportive communities can change lives.

Supporting Age Connects Torfaen felt like a natural choice. Earlier this year, they won our fundraising competition, and as we learned more about their work, we realised just how closely our values align. They provide vital support for older people and their families, tackling loneliness, promoting independence and creating opportunities for people to stay connected. Their innovative dementia services are particularly inspiring, supporting not only those living with dementia but also the families walking alongside them.

For both of us, this cause is deeply personal. Between us, we've experienced the impact dementia has on individuals and families, both personally and professionally. We've seen the challenges it brings, but we've also witnessed the incredible difference that compassionate support, understanding and meaningful connections can make. Age Connects Torfaen's approach of celebrating the person beyond the diagnosis resonates strongly with us.

As for the Cardiff 10K… we're certainly not seasoned runners! We're two women in our 30s rediscovering a love for movement while wondering why our knees click every time we stand up. But that's exactly why we're doing it—to show it's never too late to challenge yourself, prioritise your wellbeing and do something meaningful.
