This weekend, I’m running a full marathon. Yes — the full 26.2 miles.
When I started training, I genuinely wasn’t sure my hips and ankles would cope with preparing for a third marathon. Somehow, they have held together, and now there’s no avoiding it: on Sunday, I’ll be taking on every one of those miles.
During the long, often painful training runs, I found myself thinking a lot about our friend Malachy. He never failed to beep the horn whenever he spotted me running, and he always made a point of stopping by my desk later to let me know — usually paired with a perfectly timed sarcastic comment. That mix of encouragement and humour was pure Malachy, and he never failed to make me laugh.
I’m running in memory of Malachy and to raise funds for a cause that reflects what he loved most.
Music was Malachy’s passion. Any conversation about bands quickly turned into links, playlists, and enthusiastic attempts to broaden my music knowledge. In his spirit, David Silcock and I have chosen to support the Oh Yeah Music Centre, a charity that lives and breathes music.
The Oh Yeah Music Centre is Northern Ireland’s dedicated hub for music. They support, champion, and showcase NI’s incredible talent, providing an inclusive, welcoming space for musicians of all ages and backgrounds. Their work is vital to keeping Belfast’s music scene alive and thriving.
How you can help:
· Donate any amount — every pound genuinely makes a difference
· Share my fundraising page with colleagues, friends, and family who knew Malachy
Thank you! On race day, I will be using Malachy's sarcasm and thinking of everyone who helped me to the finish line.
