Since its founding in 1998, the Gellideg Foundation Group (GFG) in Merthyr Tydfil has grown from a parenting class wanting to do more for children on their social housing estate, to supporting generations of families and thousands of people in the South Wales town. The GFG team support people from across the borough who are on very low incomes, who are in poor health, and people who are older or younger. They see improving wellbeing as a means of tackling ill health and deprivation with an ambition is to make a lasting change to local people’s lives and break the cycle of intergenerational ill health and poor wellbeing.
Today they have launched an appeal to raise money for their Community Pantry, which is facing unprecedented demand. Can you help them purchase more food and essential items to make sure that everyone gets the support they need over the next few months?
More families are struggling with essential bills and food costs right now because of the Cost of Living Crisis. They want to make sure that the pantry is stocked with fruit and vegetables, groceries, toiletries and cleaning products to help these struggling families so that no one goes without.
With this appeal, in partnership with Localgiving, they are working to raise £3,000 to support their Community Pantry, a vital lifeline for families in Merthyr Tydfil who are facing food insecurity. Every week, the pantry helps local people access affordable, nutritious food in a welcoming, dignified space — but demand is growing, and we can’t do it alone.
This £3000 will help the team purchase subsidised produce from FareShare Cymru and In Kind Direct to distribute to households in crisis across Merthyr Tydfil . The pantry provides period products, toiletries, cleaning products, groceries fresh fruit and vegetables, and fridge and freezer items.
Speaking to us about the campaign, Helen Buhaenko, Manager of the GFG told us:
“Your donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference. Donations of anything between £5, £20, £50 and £100 are all very appreciated. This isn't just about food, it's about community, dignity, and hope. It's about making sure no parent has to skip a meal so their child can eat. It’s about neighbours looking out for each other in tough times. And this is where you come in. If you believe in community, in kindness, and in taking action that truly helps people, please consider donating today.”
