To train and support volunteers who provide free, friendly and confidential one-to-one support to adults who would like help with reading and writing. Providing safe, suitable spaces and resources for the students and volunteers to work together.
Why the community needs us
National statistics state that one in six adults may be struggling with reading and writing. Adults may feel too embarrassed to ask for help or put off by the thought of joining in formal group classes. A Got to Read trained volunteer can offer free, friendly and confidential one-to-one support to help someone work on personal reading and writing goals. Becoming a confident reader can be a life changing experience.
Our impact on the community
Each student with Got to Read is helped to work on the reading and writing goals which are most important to them. Someone might want to be able to read with their child, improve their spelling, follow a recipe, complete a job application, understand health information, or even simply start to read from scratch. Becoming a confident reader can help someone to take control of their life.
