Running the Great North Run for Magic Moments for Autistic Kids
This September, I’m lacing up for the Great North Run — half a marathon, 13.1 miles through Newcastle and South Shields — to raise money for a local charity: Magic Moments for Autistic Kids.
Based here in Scunthorpe, Magic Moments has been supporting children on the autistic spectrum and their families since 2002. Their work goes far beyond fundraising — they run a sensory room, a café, and a charity shop on Market Hill, all designed to give autistic kids the “magic moments” that build confidence and self-esteem. They also support siblings, helping them understand and connect with their brothers or sisters, and they’re working towards a dream of a purpose-built respite centre for local families. Their impact was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service back in 2009, and over 20 years on they’re still going strong for families across North Lincolnshire.
As for me — I’ll be honest, 13.1 miles is no small ask. I’m building up my long runs week by week between now and September, trading lie-ins for early morning miles and slowly getting used to the idea that running further than 10K doesn’t have to be miserable. It’s a challenge, but a small one compared to what families supported by Magic Moments navigate every day.
Every pound raised goes straight back into North Lincolnshire, supporting kids and families who could really use it. If you can spare anything, I’d be hugely grateful — and if you spot me out training around Scunthorpe, feel free to shout encouragement (or sympathy).
Thank you for your support!
