We have been supporting families to go on Wild Walks (adventures for children to take their griwn ups on) for over 12 years. Hackney council first commissioned us to produce some maps back in 2014, and we have since then developed 12 lovely maps of Wild walks across Hackney and led hundreds of walks for families to explore the glorious wild places in our borough. As the weather improves, we need to raise funds to cover volunteer expenses: a travel card, the snacks and drinks we bring to share, and any other out-of-pocket expenses.
Our volunteers are previous wild walkers and family campers, and largely come from the communities we target to get outdoors. Often single mums or from communities who are less likely to be seen outside, they're the best placed to share the love of standing in Epping Forest oin the rain, eating toast and drinking coffee we have just made over a camp stove, or showing how easy it is to see a kingfisher on Hackney Marshes, or see the first snowdrops in Haggerston Park. The best to calm the nerves of the mums, dads and carers who have never before encouraged their children to play just out of sight, dig in mud or run fast down a hill.
Our volunteers are trained by us to lead the walks, vetted, and given safeguarding training. In the future, we want to make sure they have first-aid training as well. We would also like to give them waterproof coats, trousers, and other gear needed for these regular outdoor adventures. That all costs money.
Can you help us make Family Wild Walks a regular adventure in Hackney?
