We have secured funding from Comic Relief via the South Yorkshire Community foundation. We will provide opportunities for our members to participate in a wide range of sporting and dance activities. This will be kicked off with a launch event on Saturday 4th October in Handsworth Community Park. A variety of sporting opportunities including; Zorbing, street kick and multi sports will be freely available on the day. The free event, run by Activity Sheffield on our behalf, is open to the public. Its aims are to raise awareness, improve community cohesion, increase our team of volunteers and help other families in need to access our ongoing weekly inclusive multi sports activity. We will then deliver a weekly 3 hour inclusive multi sports/dance session for children and young people to access. Alongside this we will train 10 parents to become sports leaders’ level 2. By educating the parents and volunteers we will ensure activities can continue to be delivered in the area by giving the volunteers skills to deliver sessions on a regular basis and therefore ensuring this activity is sustainable. They will gain experience of coaching this group through the qualification. We have some funding to purchase some multi sports equipment for the group to keep and use for their ongoing activities. We will charge participants a nominal sub fee per session throughout the grant to ensure we are able to continue to deliver the session and use the funds for both future events and the replacement of equipment.
Why they need our serviceOur members have difficulties on many levels including learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional and behavioural problems. They struggle in school, home and community life. Our children are often excluded in activities that most take for granted in their daily lives. They are rarely invited to birthday parties and almost never invited to friends’ houses for tea and other similar social activities. They often struggle with social skills, lack a sense of community and belonging and have a low sense of self-esteem.
