Harmless is an organisation that combines personal and professional experience to support people who self harm, their friends and families, and professionals. We believe in recovery, and through our work we want to promote health and well being. So many people who self harm feel overwhelmed by their emotions, and this is something we want to work hard to change. Harmless was set up by people who understand self harm and at the heart of our service is a real sense of hope. We also provide suicide prevention and suicide bereavement support through our sister service The Tomorrow Project.
Why the community needs us
We directly challenge and improve discrimination, stigma and isolation created by misconceptions about self harm and the people who it affects. By working in this manner we can promote awareness, public compassion and improve the quality of support and understanding that surround the diverse range of people that self harm. We promote dialogue about self harm, promote and enhance public perceptions and understanding, and enhance client sense of empowerment and encouragement.
Our impact on the community
Harmless averages six new requests a week for face-to-face help. We have strong local links with other professional services for which references and letters of support can be provided. We have been nominated and finalists for several awards, winning; Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2011; East Midlands Community Impact Award; Community Recognition Award; in addition to many others each acknowledging the valuable service we provide our community.
