The Centre of Excellence for Self Harm and Suicide Prevention
Harmless combines personal and professional experience to support people who self harm, their friends and families, and professionals. We believe in recovery and promoting health and wellbeing. So many people who self harm feel overwhelmed by their emotions, and this is something we work hard to change. Harmless was established by people who understand self harm and at the heart of our service is a real sense of hope. We also provide suicide prevention and suicide bereavement support through our sister service The Tomorrow Project.
Why the community needs us
We directly challenge stigma and the isolation created by misconceptions about self harm and the people it affects. We work to promote awareness, public compassion and to improve the quality of support and understanding that surround the diverse range of people that self harm. We also promote dialogue about self harm, enhance public perceptions and understanding, and support the empowerment of those we help.
Our impact on the community
Harmless averages six new requests a week for face-to-face help. We have strong local links with other professional services for which references and letters of support can be provided. Harmless and its projects have been recognised with over twenty commendations and awards, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the East Midlands Community Impact Award and The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Award for the East Midlands.
